MemberPress vs. Heartbeat: pricing, fees, features, and choosing the right platform for your community

MemberPress Alternative: Heartbeat vs. MemberPress

Intro

MemberPress is a WordPress plugin. It installs on a site you already run and puts a paywall in front of your content: pages, posts, downloads, courses, etc. Access rules decide who sees what, payments are processed via Stripe, and members log in to read gated content.

For many creators and coaches early in their journey, especially those who build on WordPress, MemberPress can be a way to test the waters of paid community-building. But creators outgrow it much faster than they expect, because the plugin doesn't offer events, workflows, pricing flexibility, cohort-based courses, member match-ups, and many other features that keep communities vibrant and growing. And since admins are still building on WordPress, they have to spend time wrestling with other plugins, updates, hosting, and other technical tasks.

The member experience at MemberPress starts with a paywall. Discussion boards and messaging are an add-on you buy later, and even once you have them there is no live feed for members to talk to each other in between, no event to show up to, no cohort to move through together, and no room where they can collaborate, celebrate wins, and help one another. That means the admin spends much of their time outside MemberPress, helping members 1:1 in Zoom calls and emails, and it means members aren't truly part of a living community, so they churn faster.

Both products are honest about what they are. MemberPress calls itself a membership plugin for WordPress, and that is what it is. The real question is whether a membership plugin is still the right thing eighteen months from now, once you have members who expect each other.

Where Heartbeat wins

Community

This is the key structural difference: MemberPress is designed to paywall content, and community-building is an afterthought, only available as part of an add-on suite. On Heartbeat, community-building is the central function, and everything follows from it.

MemberPress rules decide who can open which page, post or file, and the plugin is good at that narrow job. Building a proper community requires an add-on called ClubSuite, available on their Growth plan ($349.50 for year one, $699 after). It includes three features: ClubCircles for private discussion boards, ClubConnect for member-to-member messaging, and ClubDirectory for searchable member profiles.

Heartbeat offers those features and so much more, available on all tiers, including your 14-day free trial (which you can start today, no credit card required). See the difference here:

The warning icons on the MemberPress side are not tier gates. ClubCircles, ClubConnect and ClubDirectory are separate add-ons you install on top of the plan, and the plan has to be Growth or higher before you can install them at all.

Voice and video rooms are live spaces members drop into, up to 256 people at once, with unlimited hours on every plan. Discussion boards are asynchronous by design, and they have their place too, which is why Heartbeat offers both. Coaches and community-builders know that some conversations and courses are designed for live, synchronous interaction.

Automated groups re-evaluate themselves every hour against filters you set: post count, last login, location, events attended, reactions received, email engagement. A member entering or leaving a group can trigger a workflow. These go further than you think, and are limited only by your imagination. Workflows and automated groups can, for example, catch someone becoming unengaged in their first month, and target them with personalized messages to prevent churn. On a platform like MemberPress, you might only find out that a member is unengaged when they churn, and by then it's too late.

Match-ups pair members for introductions on a schedule you choose. It is the cheapest engagement mechanic available and it runs without you.

Events

MemberPress has no events. No event calendar, no calendar management, no RSVPs, no ticketing, and nothing in the add-on library that adds them. The documented approach is to install a separate events plugin such as Event Espresso or RegFox, protect the event pages with MemberPress rules, and create a dedicated membership level to control who can register.

CapabilityHeartbeatMemberPress

Automatic calendar invite on RSVP✅ All tiers
Public event pages for non-members✅ All tiers
Location hidden until RSVP✅ All tiers

Tiered ticket pricing is the row worth stopping on. Members pay $10, non-members pay $25, your VIP group pays nothing, all for the same event, priced automatically by which group someone is in. That turns an event into a way to find customers instead of a perk for the ones you have. A non-member buys a ticket, spends ninety minutes inside your community, and sees what they have been missing.

Heartbeat connects to Zoom natively. Meeting links generate themselves, recordings sync back onto the event, attendance is tracked. An RSVP drops the event onto the member's Google or Outlook calendar. Reminders run on levels (Heavy, Medium, None) rather than making you enter a date and time for each one. MemberPress does have a Zoom integration, but it runs through Zapier on the Developer Tools add-on, and it registers members for meetings rather than attaching a meeting to an event.

You can assemble a version of this on WordPress. It takes a second plugin, a membership level per ticket type, and someone to keep the whole arrangement working through the next round of updates.

Courses

MemberPress includes a limited LMS (Learning Management System). There's a course builder, drip release, quizzes and assignments on their Growth tier, plus certificates and a gradebook on Scale. If you are grading self-paced students taking one-size-fits-all courses, that might be sufficient. But there are serious gaps.

Course type changeable without a rebuild✅ All tiers

Courses that live inside a community✅ All tiers⚠️ Needs ClubSuite, Growth+

In Heartbeat, every cohort is a fully independent instance of the course with its own modules, lessons, assignments, pricing and settings. When cohort 4 opens, cohort 3 stays live and intact, and members of cohort 3 never see cohort 4's content or its price. You can also build evergreen, drip and cohort courses from the same structure and switch between them without starting over.

MemberPress runs cohorts inside CoachKit, its coaching product, where a cohort is a way to group and serve clients moving through a program together. That is a different object from a course you can price separately per intake. If your business is a live program with defined start dates and cohort-specific pricing, that distinction is critical.

Assignment types are also broader on Heartbeat. Public submissions post to a discussion channel, so members learn from each other's work, Private submissions go only to facilitators, and External sends a member to another tool and records completion when they come back.

AI

Both platforms use AI to some extent, and MemberPress's implementation is more serious than many in the category. It is worth being precise about what it can do.

Pulse is fully integrated inside Heartbeat, and it can build, update, and monitor every part of the platform. Admins can use it from day one with zero configuration, and there are no credit limits. Drop in a workshop transcript and Pulse builds the course. Ask it for a paid offer, a landing page, an automated group, or an onboarding flow, and it builds those too. It is on every plan, including the $49/month Build tier and our free trial, and nothing it does is metered.

MemberPress's AI Course Generator writes a course outline, lesson content and quiz questions, and it does that well, albeit with credit limits at every tier. AI Foundation is more like an extension: it stands up an MCP server on your WordPress site, so you can point Claude, Cursor or VS Code at your MemberPress data, and operate the site from there. That puts the onus back on the administrator to pay for one or more of those services in addition to MemberPress and its AI credit limits, and furthermore, it assumes they are comfortable connecting an AI client to a server.

Automation and retention

MemberPress automates through reminder emails. You can send a note a few days before a renewal, when a card is about to expire, or to someone who entered an email address and never finished signing up. Those are limited but real retention tools, and they work. Beyond email, the plugin's automation story is Zapier and the REST API, both of which MemberPress lists on the Scale plan ($499.50 for year one, $999 after).

Multi-step cancellation and retention flow✅ Grow+
Legacy (grandfathered) pricing when you raise prices✅ All tiers

Two of Heartbeat's features that MemberPress doesn't have touch revenue directly.

When a Heartbeat member on Grow or above starts a cancellation, they do not simply cancel. They move through a sequence you configure: a coupon, a downgrade to a cheaper tier, a survey, an in-app modal. On MemberPress, a member cancels from their account dashboard, and that is the end of it. Reminders before renewal can help, but they fire at people who have not decided to leave yet, and more sophisticated targeting and other interventions are not an option. Cancellation flows on Heartbeat catches the ones who have.

Legacy pricing is the other one. When you raise a price on Heartbeat, the platform asks you a question: keep existing members at the price they signed up on, or move everyone to the new one. Both paths are supported, and the choice is a single click. MemberPress has no equivalent, so grandfathering means keeping the old membership level alive forever alongside the new one, and managing both by hand.

Where MemberPress wins

There is no platform fee on their Growth and Scale tiers. Heartbeat charges a modest fee for payments processed by your community, which keeps us invested in your success, motivates us to grow your community with you, and covers the cost of all the additional features we offer: live events, custom landing pages, channel access flexibility, cohort courses, custom pricing options, advanced workflows, cancellation flows, unlimited Pulse/AI credits, and so much more. If you are running a smaller community, don't need any of the features discussed above, and your priority is minimizing costs, MemberPress is cheaper in the long run. (But they don't offer a free trial or monthly plans, so you are making a commitment for an entire year.)

You own everything. Your database, your files, your domain, your theme. You can export it, move hosts, hand it to a developer, or keep running it if the company disappears. You can export almost everything from Heartbeat, too, but fundamentally, Heartbeat is hosted software, and you are a tenant in it.

It sits on top of a site that already works. If your traffic arrives from search into a library of articles on your own domain, MemberPress paywalls that library exactly where it stands, and your pages keep their URLs and their rankings. Heartbeat is not a replacement for your website.

WordPress is widely supported. There are hundreds of thousands of WordPress experts who can develop plugins and themes for you. If MemberPress doesn't do something you want, you can find or build a plugin for that and bolt it on. (But be advised, this all adds technical complexity. MemberPress is itself a plugin, while Heartbeat is one integrated platform.)

Gift memberships on the Scale tier. MemberPress Scale ($499.50 for year one, $999 after) lets your members buy a membership as a gift for a friend or family member, and sells gift cards they can redeem. The same tier sells memberships in bulk to organizations through corporate accounts. Heartbeat has no equivalent of either, so if gifting is part of how you sell, that is a concrete advantage.

Which should you choose?

Choose MemberPress if what you are selling is access to content. You already have a WordPress site that ranks, and the job is to put a wall around part of it without disturbing the rest. You want to keep your platform costs to a flat annual number with no percentage on top, and you are comfortable owning the hosting, the updates and the plugin conflicts that come with that.

Choose Heartbeat if you want a fully-integrated community solution with fewer limitations. You want people in your community to talk to each other and build connections, not just read your gated content. You run events, or you would if charging for them were possible, and you want to open them to non-members at a different price as a way of finding customers. You teach live programs in cohorts that need their own price per intake. You want retention handled with not just emails before renewal, but custom notifications, personalized workflows, and cancellation save offers. You would rather describe what you want in plain language and watch Pulse build it for you than assemble it from plugins. You want to try all of it free with zero commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Can you migrate from MemberPress to Heartbeat?

Yes. MemberPress bills through your own Stripe account, so your active paying members come across through Heartbeat's Stripe subscription import: you upload the Stripe subscription export, map each price to a Heartbeat offer, and nobody is double-charged or asked to re-subscribe. Content and members migrate separately, and Heartbeat's team helps with the move on every plan. The Scale plan adds a dedicated onboarding rep who runs the migration for you.

Can I set up automated workflows on MemberPress?

Not natively, in the sense most people mean. MemberPress has no workflow builder. Its built-in automation is reminder emails: a note before a subscription renews, before or after it expires, when a card is about to expire, or to someone who started signing up and never finished. Anything conditional or multi-step has to come from somewhere else. That means Zapier, which MemberPress lists on the Scale plan ($499.50 for year one, $999 after), the Developer Tools event webhooks, which send JSON to a system you build yourself, or a separate automation plugin such as Uncanny Automator. Heartbeat includes native workflows on every plan, 5 on the $49/month Build tier and unlimited on Grow and above. Triggers fire on things members actually do: joining, entering or leaving an automated group, RSVPing to an event (filterable by ticket type), finishing a lesson. Actions go beyond email to direct messages, granting or removing access, and an in-app popup that appears inside the community with video, a celebration animation and a call to action.

Does MemberPress charge transaction fees?

The Launch plan charges 4.9% on every successful payment, on top of your payment processor's fee. With Stripe at 2.9% plus $0.30, that is about 7.8% plus $0.30 per sale. Growth and Scale charge nothing on top of the processor. Heartbeat's fee is 5% on Build, 2.5% on Grow and 1.25% on Scale, also on top of Stripe. If you are on MemberPress Launch and selling regularly, moving up to Growth pays for itself quickly.

Can you run paid events on MemberPress?

Not natively. MemberPress has no event calendar, no calendar management, no RSVPs and no ticketing, and there is no events add-on in its library. The usual approach is to install a separate events plugin such as Event Espresso or RegFox, protect the event pages with MemberPress rules, and create a membership level that exists only to control who can register. Heartbeat includes events on every plan, with paid tickets, a different price per member group, public event pages you can share with non-members, automatic calendar invites on RSVP, and a native Zoom connection that generates the link, syncs the recording and tracks attendance.

Does MemberPress have community features?

Yes, on the Growth plan and above, through an add-on suite called ClubSuite. ClubCircles gives you private discussion boards with reactions and moderation tools, ClubConnect gives members real-time direct messaging plus a chat room per Circle, and ClubDirectory gives you searchable member profiles. What is missing is an activity feed, voice and video rooms, events, and any automated grouping of members by behavior. Heartbeat includes discussion channels, chat, direct messages, a member directory, voice and video rooms for up to 256 people, automated groups and match-ups on every plan, starting at $49 a month with a 14-day free trial.
