Who it's for

People who want to build a drawing and painting practice online, from the bases of drawing through to portrait and composition, working at their own pace.

Members come for structure rather than scattered tutorials, and for an atelier atmosphere where they share their drawings, ask questions and follow a set order of study. Many also meet in person through local groups that draw together in parks and museums.

Who built it

Charlotte Salvanès and Laurent Bailly founded un autre atelier. Charlotte is a painter, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris and has taught for twenty years. She found how well online teaching could work during the first lockdown, and built the atelier's teaching around detailed theory and technique rooted in classical, modern and contemporary art history.

They run it with a team that keeps the programs structured and the atelier running day to day.

Learning to draw in the French atelier tradition

The Beaux-Arts de Paris, formally the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, is one of France's best-known art schools. It traces its roots to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, founded in 1648, and took its current form in 1817.

French art teaching has long been organized around the atelier, a studio where students learn from a working artist, starting with drawing before moving on to painting. Two subjects sit at the core of that training. Morphology is the study of the forms of the human body as an artist sees them, closer to observation than to medical anatomy. Composition covers how shapes, values and space are arranged within a picture.

Online programs bring that structure to people who cannot attend a studio in person, with lessons taken in a set order and work shared for feedback.

What's inside

Step-by-step programs of around thirty courses each, covering Drawing Basics (Bases du dessin), Morphology (Morphologie) and Composition, with courses opening in sequence so study stays progressive. Documents hold extended theory and answers to common questions, and assignments link straight to the channels where members post their artwork.

Live sessions include Getting Started at the Atelier (Bien démarrer à l'atelier) for new members, Atelier du vivant and artist talks such as a three-part series with Michel Perot, alongside city groups that organize drawing meetups in parks and museums. A YouTube channel carries free videos on learning to draw and interviews with artists.
