Patreon Alternative: Heartbeat vs. Patreon
Patreon vs. Heartbeat: fees, community, courses, events, and choosing the right platform once your members want each other

Intro
Patreon is where fans pay creators. A fan picks a tier and gets your posts, videos, podcast episodes and maybe a chat or a Discord role. It is built around one person making things and many people supporting them, and it does that job well. Most fans already have an account and a saved card, so joining your page takes a tap.
Heartbeat is built around something different: members who talk to each other. A paid community is a room, not a feed. Members meet in channels and live rooms, take courses together and show up to events, and they stay for the people they’ve met as much as for what you publish.
Plenty of creators start on Patreon and outgrow it when their fans start wanting each other. That’s when the gaps show: members can’t message each other, chat stops at ten spaces, courses are posts in a folder, and every creator who published after August 4, 2025 pays a 10% platform fee on everything members pay.
| Heartbeat | Patreon | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Communities where members talk to each other and the business runs on membership, courses and events | Fans supporting a creator’s posts, videos and podcasts |
| Entry price | $49/mo, or $490/yr | Free |
| Platform fee | 5% / 2.5% / 1.25% | 10% for pages published after Aug 4, 2025 |
| Free trial | ✅ 14 days, no card | n/a, free to start |
| Member-to-member messages | ✅ Every plan | ❌ |
| Courses | ✅ Evergreen, drip and cohort | ❌ Posts grouped into collections |
| Events | Free and paid, every plan | Livestreams; ticketed Lives in beta |
Patreon is cheaper while you’re small and fans are mostly there for your work. The question is what happens once your members are there for each other too.
Where Heartbeat wins
Community
Patreon’s community tools are comments, polls, and up to ten chat spaces you can lock to a tier. Inside a chat, members can reply in threads, react, and share photos. Outside it, they can’t reach each other: Patreon says member-to-member messaging isn’t possible, and the creator can only direct message paid members. For anything bigger, Patreon’s own guide to community tools points you to Discord or Discourse, which means running your community in a second product and keeping the roles in sync.
On Heartbeat, the community is the product. Everything below is on all tiers, including the 14-day free trial, which you can start today with no credit card.
| Capability | Heartbeat | Patreon |
|---|---|---|
| Discussion channels | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Comments on posts |
| Chat channels | ✅ Unlimited, all tiers | ⚠️ Up to 10 chat spaces |
| Member-to-member direct messages | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Creator messages to members | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Paid members only |
| Voice and video rooms (up to 256) | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Creator-hosted Lives |
| Automated groups that update from member behavior | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Match-ups (automatic member introductions) | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
Voice and video rooms are spaces members drop into, up to 256 people at once, with unlimited hours on every plan. A Patreon Live is a broadcast: you stream, and members watch and chat alongside it.
Automated groups re-evaluate themselves every hour against filters you set: post count, last login, location, events attended, reactions received. A member entering or leaving a group can trigger a workflow, so you can catch someone going quiet in their first month and reach out before they cancel.
Match-ups pair members for introductions on a schedule you choose. It’s the cheapest engagement mechanic there is, and it runs without you.
Courses
Patreon has no course builder. You can group posts into a collection, set the order, and sell the collection as a one-time purchase. That works for a video series. It doesn’t give you lessons members work through, quizzes, assignments, progress, or a cohort that starts on a date.
| Capability | Heartbeat | Patreon |
|---|---|---|
| Self-paced and drip courses | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Collections of posts |
| Quizzes | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Assignments: Public, Private, External | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Cohort courses, independently priced per cohort | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Sell a course on its own | ✅ All tiers | ✅ Collections as one-time purchases |
| Builds a course from a transcript or file (Pulse) | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
In Heartbeat, every cohort is its own instance of the course with its own modules, lessons, assignments, pricing and settings. When cohort 4 opens, cohort 3 stays live and intact. Public assignments post to a discussion channel, so members learn from each other’s work.
You don’t have to rebuild your back catalogue by hand. Give Pulse a workshop transcript, a document or a list of your best Patreon posts and it drafts the course, which you then edit.
Events
Patreon’s events are its livestreams. You go live from a webcam, the app or streaming software, members get notified, and there’s a chat beside the stream. Ticketed Lives, which let you sell access to one stream, are in beta, with a $3 minimum ticket. Lives aren’t available to 18+ creators.
| Capability | Heartbeat | Patreon |
|---|---|---|
| Native events with RSVPs | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Scheduled Lives |
| Paid tickets | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Ticketed Lives, in beta |
| Different ticket price per member group | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
Tiered ticket pricing is the row worth stopping on. Members pay $10, non-members pay $25, your top tier pays nothing, all for the same event, priced by which group someone is in. That turns an event into a way to find new members instead of a perk for the ones you have.
Automation and retention
Patreon’s automation is Autopilot, a set of promotions Patreon runs for you. It sends discounts to free members it thinks are likely to upgrade, emails paid members about locked posts in higher tiers, chases abandoned checkouts, and offers some members a discount when they cancel. Patreon picks who gets the offers. You can set a maximum discount and choose tiers.
| Capability | Heartbeat | Patreon |
|---|---|---|
| Native workflows with your own triggers and actions | ✅ 5 on Build, unlimited Grow+ | ❌ |
| Abandoned checkout reminders | ✅ All tiers | ✅ Autopilot |
| Offer at cancellation | ✅ Multi-step flow, Grow+ | ⚠️ A discount, sent to members Patreon selects |
| In-app popup as a workflow action | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Zapier | ✅ All tiers | ✅ |
Heartbeat workflows fire on what members do: joining, finishing a lesson, RSVPing, entering or leaving an automated group. Actions include direct messages, granting or removing access, and an in-app popup. When a member on Grow or above starts to cancel, they move through a sequence you set up: a coupon, a cheaper tier, a survey, a message.
Fees
Patreon costs nothing until fans pay you, then takes 10% of every payment for any page published after August 4, 2025. Heartbeat charges a monthly plan plus a smaller percentage. Card processing is about the same on both (2.9% + $0.30 for US cards), so this table leaves it out.
| Members pay you | Patreon (10%) | Heartbeat | Difference per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $500/mo | $50/mo | $74/mo (Build: $49 + 5%) | Patreon $288 cheaper |
| $1,000/mo | $100/mo | $99/mo (Build: $49 + 5%) | About even |
| $5,000/mo | $500/mo | $274/mo (Grow: $149 + 2.5%) | Heartbeat $2,712 cheaper |
| $20,000/mo | $2,000/mo | $649/mo (Grow: $149 + 2.5%) | Heartbeat $16,212 cheaper |
The $5,000 row uses Grow because Build covers up to 350 members. On a legacy Patreon plan the break-even moves, but not by much: at 8% (Pro), Patreon takes $400 a month on $5,000. A legacy plan also only lasts while your page stays published. Unpublish it even briefly and it moves to 10% when you republish.
Where Patreon wins
It’s free until you earn. There’s no monthly plan. If you’re starting out, or your members pay you less than about $1,000 a month in total, Patreon costs less than Heartbeat.
Your fans may already be there. Many fans already have a Patreon account with a saved card and the app on their phone. Joining your page is a tap, and fans who support several creators keep them together.
Video hosting comes included. Creators with paying fans can upload up to 100 hours of video a month at no extra cost. Heartbeat includes 50 hours of hosting on Grow, 200 on Scale, and sells it on Build as a $19/month add-on.
Private podcast feeds. Patreon gives each member a private RSS link, so your members-only episodes play in Apple Podcasts, Overcast or any other podcast app.
Gift memberships. Fans can gift memberships to other fans, and you can gift 1 to 12 months to up to 1,000 people per link. Heartbeat has no equivalent.
No member cap. Patreon doesn’t limit how many members you have on any plan. Heartbeat’s Build plan covers up to 350, Grow up to 5,000, and Scale is unlimited.

Which should you choose?
Choose Patreon if your fans come for your work. You publish videos, episodes, art or writing, members want early access and a thank-you, and the conversation happens around you rather than between them. You’re earning less than about $1,000 a month, you want zero fixed cost, and your fans already have Patreon accounts.
Choose Heartbeat if your members have started wanting each other. They ask to be introduced, the chat outgrew ten spaces, or the real community lives in a Discord you run on the side. You want to teach courses with lessons and cohorts, run events with tickets priced by tier, and keep more of what members pay once you’re past about $1,000 a month. You’d rather describe what you want and have Pulse build it than assemble it from integrations. You want to try all of it free with zero commitment.
Frequently asked questions
Can you migrate from Patreon to Heartbeat?
Yes, but your paying members re-subscribe. Patreon processes your members’ payments itself, so there is no Stripe account to move subscriptions out of. Export your members’ emails from Patreon’s Relationship manager, build your Heartbeat community, then email your members a signup link, with a promo code if you want to cover the overlap with what they already paid Patreon. Unpublishing your Patreon page afterwards stops its billing. Heartbeat’s team helps with the move on every plan, and the Scale plan adds a dedicated onboarding rep who runs the migration for you. The Patreon switch guide walks through each step.
How much does Patreon take from creators?
Creators who published their page after August 4, 2025 pay a 10% platform fee. Older pages can keep a legacy plan (5% Founders, 8% Pro, or 11% Pro + Merch) as long as the page stays published. On top of the platform fee, card payments cost 2.9% + $0.30 for creators paid out in US dollars, and Patreon adds 2.5% when a member pays in a different currency. Memberships bought in Patreon’s iOS app go through Apple, which takes 30%, except for US fans, who can check out on the web. Heartbeat’s fee is 5% on Build, 2.5% on Grow and 1.25% on Scale, plus Stripe’s processing.
Can Patreon members talk to each other?
A little. Members can comment on posts and talk in up to 10 chat spaces, but they can’t message each other directly, and the creator can only message paid members. Patreon’s own help center points creators who want more to Discord or Discourse. Heartbeat includes discussion channels, chat, member-to-member direct messages, a member directory, and voice and video rooms for up to 256 people on every plan, starting at $49 a month with a 14-day free trial.
Does Patreon have courses?
Not as a course builder. Patreon groups posts into collections, which you can also sell as a one-time purchase, but there are no lessons, quizzes, assignments or cohorts. Heartbeat includes evergreen, drip and cohort courses on every plan, with quizzes and assignments, and Pulse can build a course from a transcript or a file you already have.
Can I keep a free tier on Heartbeat?
Yes. Heartbeat sells memberships, courses and events through offers, and free tiers sit alongside paid ones. Free members see what paid members get, and gated channels and courses show them a checkout prompt, so your free tier works the way Patreon’s free membership does: as the way in.
