Gumroad Alternative: Heartbeat vs. Gumroad

Gumroad vs. Heartbeat: fees, community, courses, events, and choosing the right platform once your buyers want each other

Gumroad Alternative: Heartbeat vs. Gumroad

Intro

Gumroad is where creators sell things. Ebooks, templates, presets, video courses, software with license keys: you upload it, set a price, and share the link. There’s no monthly plan, checkout is simple, and Gumroad is the merchant of record, so it collects and pays the sales tax for you. For a product people buy once, it does the job well.

Heartbeat is built around something different: members who talk to each other. A paid community is a room, not a receipt. Members meet in channels and live rooms, take courses together and show up to events, and they stay for the people they’ve met as much as for what you sell them.

Plenty of creators start on Gumroad and find their buyers want more than the file. They want to ask questions, share what they made with it, and meet the other people who bought it. That’s when the gaps show: Gumroad’s Community is one plain-text chat per product, messages can’t be searched, notifications come as a daily or weekly recap, and a course is a product with pages of content.

Gumroad costs nothing until you make a sale, and it’s the simpler tool for a product people buy once. The question is what happens when the people who bought from you want each other.

Where Heartbeat wins

Community

Gumroad Community is a free toggle on each product. Turn it on and buyers of that product get a chat room. Inside it, they can talk to you and to each other. Gumroad lists the limits itself: each community belongs to one product and can’t be merged with another, only buyers of that product get in, messages are plain text only, they aren’t searchable, and there are no instant notifications, only daily and weekly recap emails. For anything bigger, Gumroad’s answer is an integration that invites buyers into a Circle community or a Discord server, which means running your community in a second product.

On Heartbeat, the community is the product. Everything below is on all tiers, including the 14-day free trial, which you can start today with no credit card.

Match-ups (automatic member introductions)✅ All tiers❌

One community across everything you sell is the row that matters most once you have more than one product. On Gumroad, someone who bought your ebook and your template sits in two separate chats. On Heartbeat they’re one member with access to both, and the groups they belong to decide what they see.

Automated groups re-evaluate themselves every hour against filters you set: post count, last login, location, events attended, reactions received. A member entering or leaving a group can trigger a workflow, so you can catch someone going quiet in their first month and reach out before they cancel.

Match-ups pair members for introductions on a schedule you choose. It’s the cheapest engagement mechanic there is, and it runs without you.

Courses

Gumroad’s Course or tutorial product type is a one-time product with its content organized into pages. You can stream video in up to 1080p, turn off downloads, add subtitles and attach files, and you can drip lessons out by sending them in a Workflow email each week. There are no quizzes, assignments or cohorts.

Quizzes✅ All tiers❌
Assignments: Public, Private, External✅ All tiers❌
Cohort courses, independently priced per cohort✅ All tiers❌
Sell a course on its own✅ All tiers✅

In Heartbeat, every cohort is its own instance of the course with its own modules, lessons, assignments, pricing and settings. When cohort 4 opens, cohort 3 stays live and intact. Public assignments post to a discussion channel, so members learn from each other’s work.

You don’t have to rebuild a Gumroad course by hand. Give Pulse the course outline, a workshop transcript or a document and it drafts the course, which you then edit.

Events

Gumroad’s closest thing to an event is the Call product: one-on-one sessions with built-in scheduling, the durations you offer and the availability you set. It’s good for coaching sessions. There are no group events, RSVPs or live rooms.

CapabilityHeartbeatGumroad
Native events with RSVPs✅ All tiers❌
Paid tickets✅ All tiers❌
Different ticket price per member group✅ All tiers❌

Tiered ticket pricing is the row worth stopping on. Members pay $10, non-members pay $25, your top tier pays nothing, all for the same event, priced by which group someone is in. That turns an event into a way to find new members instead of a perk for the ones you have.

Automation and retention

Gumroad’s automation is Workflows: scheduled emails that start when someone buys, subscribes to your list, becomes an affiliate, abandons a cart, or reaches the end of a cancelled membership. You can filter who gets them by what they bought and when. Two limits are worth knowing: a workflow’s settings can’t be changed after it’s first published, and you can’t send any emails until you’ve earned $100 and received a payout.

CapabilityHeartbeatGumroad
Workflows triggered by what members do in the community✅ 5 on Build, unlimited Grow+❌ Purchase, signup and cancellation only
Scheduled email sequences✅ Workflow emails with delays✅ Workflows
Abandoned checkout reminders✅ All tiers✅
Offer at cancellation✅ Multi-step flow, Grow+⚠️ An email once the membership ends
In-app popup as a workflow action✅ All tiers❌
Zapier✅ All tiers✅

Heartbeat workflows fire on what members do: joining, finishing a lesson, RSVPing, entering or leaving an automated group. Actions include emails, direct messages, granting or removing access, and an in-app popup. When a member on Grow or above starts to cancel, they move through a sequence you set up: a coupon, a cheaper tier, a survey, a message.

AI

Gumroad doesn’t list any AI tools on its pricing page or in its help center.

Pulse is built into Heartbeat, and it can build, update and monitor every part of your community. Drop in a workshop transcript and Pulse builds the course. Ask it for a paid offer, a landing page, an automated group or an onboarding flow, and it builds those too. It’s on every plan, including the $49/month Build tier and the free trial, and nothing it does is metered.

Where Gumroad wins

It’s free until you sell. There’s no monthly plan, so a product that sells twice a year costs you nothing in the months it doesn’t.

It sells almost any digital product. Files up to 20 GB, software with license keys and multi-seat licenses, bundles, pay-what-you-want pricing, commissions with a 50% deposit, and tip jars. Heartbeat sells access to a community, courses and events, not downloads.

It handles sales tax for you. Gumroad is the merchant of record for every sale, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide.

Discover can bring you buyers. Once your account passes $100 in sales and a risk review, Gumroad lists your products in its marketplace and recommends them to people who have never heard of you. Those sales carry a flat 30% fee.

Booked calls are built in. The Call product handles scheduling, durations and availability for one-on-one sessions.

Which should you choose?

Choose Gumroad if you sell things people buy once and use on their own: an ebook, a preset pack, a template, a plugin. You want zero fixed cost, you’d like a marketplace to find buyers for you, and you want sales tax handled without thinking about it. Your buyers don’t need to meet each other.

Choose Heartbeat if your buyers have started wanting each other. They email you questions other buyers could answer, they share what they made, or the real conversation lives in a Discord you run on the side. You want to teach courses with lessons and cohorts, run events with tickets priced by tier, and keep members paying every month because the people are there. You’d rather describe what you want and have Pulse build it than assemble it from integrations. You want to try all of it free with zero commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Can you migrate from Gumroad to Heartbeat?

Yes, but your paying members re-subscribe. Gumroad processes payments as the merchant of record, and it no longer connects new sellers’ own Stripe accounts outside Brazil, so there is usually no Stripe subscription to move. Export your customers from Gumroad’s sales CSV, build your Heartbeat community, then email your members a signup link, with a promo code if you want to cover the overlap with what they already paid. Cancel their Gumroad memberships once they’ve joined. Heartbeat’s team helps with the move on every plan, and the Scale plan adds a dedicated onboarding rep who runs the migration for you.

How much does Gumroad take from creators?

Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 on each sale made through your profile or your own links. Card processing (2.9% + $0.30) and PayPal fees are on top. Sales through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace carry a flat 30% fee that includes processing. Once your paid sales in a calendar month pass $20,000, new direct sales that month drop to 5% + $0.50. There is no monthly fee. Heartbeat’s fee is 5% on Build, 2.5% on Grow and 1.25% on Scale, plus Stripe’s processing.

Can Gumroad customers talk to each other?

Yes, in Gumroad Community, a free chat you turn on per product. Each product gets its own chat, open only to its buyers. Messages are plain text, they can’t be searched, and members hear about new ones through daily or weekly recap emails. Heartbeat includes discussion channels, chat, member-to-member direct messages, a member directory, and voice and video rooms for up to 256 people on every plan, starting at $49 a month with a 14-day free trial.

Does Gumroad have courses?

Gumroad has a Course or tutorial product type: a product whose content is organized into pages, with streaming video and files. You can send lessons on a schedule with Workflow emails. There are no quizzes, assignments or cohorts. Heartbeat includes evergreen, drip and cohort courses on every plan, with quizzes and assignments, and Pulse can build a course from a transcript or a file you already have.

Can I still sell one-time products on Heartbeat?

Yes. Heartbeat offers can be one-time payments, installment plans or pay-what-you-want, and you can bundle several offers into one package. A course or event can be sold on its own, without a membership. Heartbeat isn’t a store for downloads, though: files live inside posts and lessons rather than as products of their own.
