Heartbeat vs. Discord

How to move your Discord server to Heartbeat

Members, channels, roles and paid access, step by step.

Updated

Discord doesn’t give server owners their members’ email addresses or a copy of the message history, so members move by joining through a signup link you announce in the server. Your channels and roles map onto Heartbeat channels and access groups, and Pulse can set them up for you.

Paid access depends on the tool that bills for it. LaunchPass and Upgrade.chat bill through your own Stripe account, so those subscriptions move with the importer. Discord’s own Server Subscriptions, Whop and Patreon hold the payments themselves, so those members re-subscribe. NocodeHackers made this move.

Before you start

Step by step

  1. Create your Heartbeat community

Start building, and leave your Discord server running while you set up. If you charge members, or plan to, connect payments too. That sets up the Heartbeat Stripe account paying members move into.

  2. Rebuild your channels and roles

Make a chat channel for each busy real-time channel and a thread channel for anything people come back to, like questions, wins and resources. Turn each role that gates channels into an access group, and give paid roles an offer. Pulse can build the whole layout from a description of your server. Repost your guides and pinned messages, or hand them to Pulse to turn into documents or a course.

  3. Create your signup link

Go to Settings > People > Sign Up Links and create the link your members will use. Attach a free access group, or an offer if they pay to join. Anyone who signs up through it lands in the right place.

  4. If you already charge: move your paying members

Skip this if your server is free or bills through Server Subscriptions, Whop or Patreon. If LaunchPass or Upgrade.chat bills through your own Stripe account, export subscriptions from Stripe (Subscriptions > Export), then run the subscription importer and choose Other, typing the tool’s name.

    1. Platform and data. Go to Settings > Import Subscriptions and press + New Migration. Pick the platform you are leaving (or Other, and type its name), then upload your subscription CSV.
    2. Column mapping. Match the columns in your file to Heartbeat’s fields. Check the preview for duplicate entries.
    3. Offer mapping. Match each old product or price to a Heartbeat offer. If an offer doesn’t exist yet, Pulse can create it for you here.
    4. Customer copy. Copy your members’ saved payment details to your Heartbeat Stripe account. In the old Stripe account, go to Customers > Copy and paste the Heartbeat account ID the importer gives you, then accept the request in your Heartbeat Stripe dashboard. Copy only current subscribers or your whole customer list.
    5. Review and migrate. Check every member, offer and next billing date, then run the migration. Each member is billed the price you mapped them to, starting on the date they would have renewed.

The typical import takes under 15 minutes, from uploading your file to running the migration. Screenshots and the full walkthrough: Import and migrate existing Stripe subscriptions.

  5. If you imported anyone: cancel the old subscriptions

The importer doesn’t touch your old platform, so cancel the original subscriptions yourself. It gives you a CSV of exactly which ones to cancel, and it flags anyone who renews in the next 72 hours so you can cancel those first. Then tick the box confirming you have canceled them. This is what stops anyone being charged twice.

Cancel them in the tool that bills for them, and remove the paid roles once those members have moved.

  6. Announce it in the server

Post the signup link where everyone will see it, such as an announcement channel (Discord’s guide), with a short note on why you’re moving and what members get. Ask your moderators and most active members to join first, so the new community is busy when everyone else arrives. Post the link more than once over the following weeks.

  7. Wind down the server

When your active members have moved, stop new posts in your old channels and leave one pinned message pointing to Heartbeat. Keep the server up for a while so late members can still find their way across.

Can I import my Discord members?

Not directly. Discord doesn’t show server owners their members’ email addresses. Members move by joining through the signup link you announce. If a tool like LaunchPass bills your paid members through your Stripe account, the importer invites those paying members for you.

Can I bring my Discord message history?

No. Discord has no export of a server’s messages for owners. Each person can only download the messages they sent. Repost the guides and pinned messages worth keeping.

Does Heartbeat have voice channels and real-time chat?

Yes. Chat channels work in real time, and voice and video channels have screen sharing and moderation controls. Thread channels hold posts with replies, for the discussions people come back to.

How long does the move take?

Setting up channels and roles is quick with Pulse. Members move over weeks, not a day: announce the link more than once, and wind down the server once most of your active members have joined. If you move paying members, the import itself typically takes under 15 minutes.

Does Heartbeat charge for the migration?

No. The subscription importer and migration support are free on every plan. On the Scale plan, a dedicated onboarding rep runs the whole migration with you.
