WhatsApp Group Alternative: Heartbeat vs. WhatsApp
WhatsApp vs. Heartbeat: paid access, member privacy, history, courses and events, and when a group chat becomes a community

Intro
Most communities start in a WhatsApp group because everyone already has the app. You make a group, share a link, and people are talking within the hour. Nobody has to make an account, learn a new tool or turn on notifications. For a group of friends, a local club or a small cohort, that’s hard to beat.
The trouble starts when the group becomes something more. Members pay you, or you want them to. New people join and can’t find the guide you posted three weeks ago. The best conversations scroll away by morning. Everyone can see everyone’s phone number. You run a call, and the only record of it is a link in the chat.
Heartbeat is built for that stage. Channels keep conversations by topic and keep them visible to people who join later, members join with an email instead of a phone number, and payments, courses and events live in the same place as the chat.

WhatsApp is the right tool while your group is free and small. The question is what happens when people start paying you, or when the group needs to remember things.
Where Heartbeat wins
Community
A WhatsApp group is one long chat. Groups hold up to 1,024 members (WhatsApp’s help center), and a WhatsApp Community links several groups under an announcement group that only admins can post in (WhatsApp’s help center). Inside each group, everything happens in one stream: questions, introductions, links and replies, in the order they were sent.
On Heartbeat, conversations sit in Channels by topic. A chat Channel works like a WhatsApp group, a thread Channel keeps each question and its answers together so they’re easy to find later, and members can message each other directly. Everything below is on all plans, including the 14-day free trial, which you can start today with no credit card.
| Capability | Heartbeat | |
|---|---|---|
| Discussion channels by topic | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ One stream per group |
| Chat channels | ✅ Unlimited, all tiers | ✅ One per group |
| Member-to-member direct messages | ✅ All tiers | ✅ Shares phone numbers |
| New members see past conversations | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Recent messages, if an admin sends them |
| Voice and video rooms (up to 256) | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Group calls |
| Automated groups that update from member behavior | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Match-ups (automatic member introductions) | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
History is the row that matters most as a group grows. When you add someone to a WhatsApp group, you can send them a batch of recent messages (WhatsApp’s help center), but anything older is out of reach, and a pinned message lasts 30 days at most and isn’t shown to people who join after it was pinned (WhatsApp’s help center). On Heartbeat, the welcome post, the rules and last month’s best answer are still there when member 300 arrives.
Automated groups re-evaluate themselves every hour against filters you set: post count, last login, location, events attended. Match-ups pair members for introductions on a schedule you choose, which in a group chat only happens when someone speaks up.
Member privacy
A WhatsApp account is a phone number (WhatsApp’s help center), and WhatsApp says members can’t hide their number from the other people in a group (WhatsApp’s help center). In a group of friends that’s fine. In a paid community of strangers, it means anyone who joins, including someone who joined to sell to your members, can save every number in the group.
Heartbeat members join with an email address and a profile they fill in. Their phone number isn’t part of their account, and you choose what the onboarding questions ask.
Paid access
WhatsApp has no way to charge for a group. Paid groups usually run on a bank transfer or a PayPal link, a spreadsheet of who has paid, and an admin who adds people when the money arrives and removes them when it stops. Every renewal is a reminder you send by hand, and every missed payment is an awkward message.
| Capability | Heartbeat | |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout on the invite link | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Monthly and annual memberships | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Free and paid tiers side by side | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Access ends when a subscription ends | ✅ All tiers | ❌ Admin removes by hand |
| Coupons and promo codes | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Sell a course or event on its own | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
On Heartbeat, you put an Offer on your Sign Up Link. Someone opens it, pays, answers your onboarding questions and lands in the Channels their tier includes. If you’re not sure what to charge, the membership pricing calculator works it out from what similar communities charge.
Courses
In a WhatsApp group, a course is a series of messages: a PDF here, a video link there, a voice note explaining the next step. Members who join late scroll back to find lesson one, if they can see it at all.
| Capability | Heartbeat | |
|---|---|---|
| Self-paced and drip courses | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Quizzes and assignments | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Cohort courses, priced per cohort | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Progress tracking | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Builds a course from a transcript or file (Pulse) | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
The files you’ve shared in the group don’t have to be rebuilt by hand. Give Pulse the PDFs, slides or a call transcript and it drafts the course, which you then edit.
Events
WhatsApp added events to chats: a name, a date, an optional location or call link, and RSVPs from people in the chat. An event has one host, you can’t invite anyone outside the chat, and members who join later don’t see events created before they arrived (WhatsApp’s help center). There are no tickets.
| Capability | Heartbeat | |
|---|---|---|
| Events with RSVPs | ✅ All tiers | ✅ In a chat |
| Paid tickets | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Different ticket price per member group | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Invite people outside the community | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Live rooms for up to 256 people | ✅ All tiers | ⚠️ Group calls |
Tiered ticket pricing lets one event do two jobs. Members pay $10, non-members pay $25, your top tier gets in free, and the people who buy a ticket see what membership would give them.
AI
Pulse is Heartbeat’s AI, and it works inside the product rather than in a chat window next to it.
| Capability | Heartbeat Pulse | |
|---|---|---|
| Builds a course from a transcript or file | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Sets up Channels and onboarding from a description | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Configures paid offers | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Sets up automations | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Drafts landing pages | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Metered by credits | No | n/a |
Describe your WhatsApp group to Pulse and it sets up the Channels, the welcome post and the onboarding questions. Ask it for a paid offer, a landing page or a workflow, and it builds those too. It’s on every plan, including the $49/month Build tier and the free trial, and nothing it does is metered.
Automation and retention
A WhatsApp group runs on whoever is paying attention. Welcoming new people, chasing renewals and noticing who has gone quiet all happen because an admin remembered to do them.
| Capability | Heartbeat | |
|---|---|---|
| Native workflows with your own triggers and actions | ✅ 5 on Build, unlimited Grow+ | ❌ |
| Welcome message to every new member | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
| Offer at cancellation | ✅ Multi-step flow, Grow+ | ❌ |
| Zapier | ✅ All tiers | ❌ |
Heartbeat workflows fire on what members do: joining, finishing a lesson, RSVPing, or going quiet. Actions include direct messages, granting or removing access, and an in-app popup. Our guide to reducing churn covers which of those keep paying members around longest.
Where WhatsApp wins
It’s free. No plan, no fee, no trial clock. If your group doesn’t charge and doesn’t need to, nothing else costs less.
Everyone already has it. Joining is a tap on a link, with no account to make and no app to install. Heartbeat members make an account first.
Messages get read. People check WhatsApp all day, and a message there reaches them where they already are. A new community has to earn a place on someone’s home screen.
Voice notes and quick calls. Recording a voice note or starting a call is built into every chat, and many groups run on them.
End-to-end encryption. Messages and calls in WhatsApp groups are end-to-end encrypted. Heartbeat isn’t end-to-end encrypted, which is what lets you moderate your Channels and lets Pulse see the community it’s helping you run.
Bigger free groups. A WhatsApp group holds up to 1,024 people at no cost. Heartbeat’s Build plan covers up to 350 members, Grow up to 5,000, and Scale is unlimited.

Which should you choose?
Choose WhatsApp if your group is free and you want it to stay that way. Members already know each other or don’t mind sharing their numbers, the conversation is mostly quick messages and voice notes, and nobody needs to find something that was posted last month.
Choose Heartbeat if your group has become something people pay for, or should. You want payments to grant and remove access without you, new members to find the welcome post and the best answers, conversations sorted by topic, and courses and events in the same place as the chat. You’d rather describe what you want and have Pulse build it. You want to try all of it free with no credit card.
Frequently asked questions
Can you move a WhatsApp group to Heartbeat?
Yes, with a link rather than an import. WhatsApp knows your members by phone number and Heartbeat invites people by Sign Up Link or email, so you build the community first, post the link in the group, and message your most active members one by one so they arrive first. After your move date, set the group so only admins can post and change its description to the link, so anyone who missed the move can still find you. The WhatsApp switch guide walks through each step and has the invite messages ready to copy.
Can you charge for a WhatsApp group?
Not inside WhatsApp. Groups have no checkout, no tiers and no way to remove someone automatically when they stop paying, so paid groups usually run on bank transfers or PayPal and an admin who adds and removes people by hand. On Heartbeat, an Offer on your Sign Up Link takes the payment and grants access in one step, renewals and failed payments are handled for you, and you can sell memberships, courses and event tickets separately.
Can other members see my phone number in a WhatsApp group?
Yes. WhatsApp accounts are tied to a phone number, and WhatsApp says members can’t hide their number from other members of a group they’re in. On Heartbeat, members join with an email address and a profile, and their phone number is never part of it.
Do new members see old messages in a WhatsApp group?
Only what an admin sends them. When you add someone, WhatsApp lets you send them a batch of recent messages, but they don’t see the group’s full history, pinned messages from before they joined, or events created before they arrived. On Heartbeat, a new member opens a Channel and sees every post and reply in it, and Courses and Documents are there from the day they join.
Is Heartbeat free like WhatsApp?
No. Heartbeat starts at $49 a month on the Build plan, with a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card. If your group is small, free, and only needs to chat, WhatsApp costs nothing and will probably serve you well. Heartbeat is for when the group has become something people would pay for, or already do.
