The Care Den
A community for people caring for aging parents, partners or loved ones with dementia, serious illness or disability.
Who it's for
People carrying the emotional weight of caring for aging parents, partners or loved ones with dementia, serious illness or disability.
The community is mostly women, though men are welcome and a few are members. It is a room where caregivers don't have to explain themselves, and members can come to one session a week or all of them, and speak up or simply listen.
Who built it
Jacquelyn Revere spent six years caring for her mother with dementia, including nineteen months caring for her mother and grandmother at the same time. Under the handle @momofmymom she has built an audience of nearly one million supporters across social media, written an op-ed for the LA Times, been featured by NPR and partnered with AARP.
Lynn McGuire-Raj, MSW, LCSW-A, was cared for by her parents during cancer treatment in her thirties and later moved home to care for them through heart disease and dementia. A former fundraiser and festival producer turned therapist, she works with clients through transitions, grief and loss in North Carolina.
What's inside
Live virtual sessions run every day of the week, led by trained peer facilitators: a Monday support circle, Self-Care Practice, Nervous System Reset, Walk & Talk, a Friday night social, Ask an Expert and a Sunday hour on grief and loss. Some Ask an Expert weeks are a workshop and some are office hours with a geriatric social worker.
The Care Den is not a curriculum. Monthly workshops with guest experts cover topics such as hospital stays, end-of-life care and finances, and past workshops stay in a library to watch later. Between sessions, members talk in private threads, voice channels and direct messages.
